“I have Never Read a Story Before”

When I’m at events like the book fair, I hear a lot of people saying “I have never read a story before”. This is why I try to make it easier for you to consume your first story.

While a lot of people claim never to have read a book before, this doesn’t mean they have never consumed a story before. People are storytelling animals, social by nature, and we enjoy sitting back to hear a story. Think back to your latest family gathering. Doesn’t an elder regale the audience with a story about something they did, or a situation where they learned something important?

What’s the Solution?

I realized when I started out that a lot of people are in this situation, and so I’m constantly thinking about how to make it easier for people to consume stories. Here’s what I’m doing right now:

1- My Books: Of course, I write books of a couple of various types in the My Books section. In this section you can find Sarim and Hazim (novels), Unoriginal Tales, and Majan Chronicles. Speaking of which…

2- The Majan Chronicles Podcast: This podcast has the Majan Chronicles Stories in a pure audio form. I think this is perfect for people who want to listen to fun, realistic stories on the go.

3- My tiny stories on social media: I post tiny stories on Instagram and Twitter. You can start and finish them in less than 3 minutes. This is great for people who want to get into reading but want something fun and simple.

4- My Mailing List and Websites for short stories: through my mailing list, you get a short story sent as a PDF to your inbox about once per month.

5- Events: I have started doing small, short events in bookshops in Oman where I read short stories for people. This has been amazing for seeing how people react to the stories, and to introduce people to short stories and books.

I guess it’s a lot, but it really is just a variety of ways to do the same thing: Introduce people to stories and hopefully getting them to try reading books.

What do you think? Are there any tools above which seem useless, or important things which I forgot? let me know.
